Non-Surgical Procedures

Dr. Bosch takes a conservative approach to treatment, focusing on non-surgical methods whenever possible. Our prerogative is always to explore procedures that are less invasive and more cost efficient. This includes, but is not limited to, Scaling and Root Planing (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar buildup in deep periodontal pockets, and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins).

Most Periodontists would agree that after Scaling and Root Planing, many patients will not require any further active treatment, including surgical therapy. However, patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain their periodontal health. Non-surgical therapy has its limitations, and when it cannot deliver the desired outcome, surgery may be needed to restore the anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases and facilitate better oral hygiene practices.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), periodontal maintenance is instituted following periodontal therapy and continues at varying intervals determined by the clinical evaluation of the dentist for the life of the dentition. This process includes the removal of bacterial plaque and calculus from supragingival and subgingival regions, site specific scaling and root planing where indicated, and polishing of the teeth. If new or recurring periodontal disease appears, additional diagnostic and treatment procedures must be considered.
